The WA Division had a very enjoyable event for the presentation of John Lucey’s Award of Excellence in Bunbury on the 10th April.
About 30 people, representing many of the people John had worked with in the south west, including some prominent local producers attended. David Windsor, Chair of the WA Division, who has known John since they studied together at UNE in the early 1980s, gave an excellent speech of congratulation, highlighting John’s many achievements working with the beef and dairy industries over a 30-year period, finishing with his development of The Cidery and Blackwood Valley Brewing Company in Bridgetown, an enterprise commenced in 2000.
In his response, John referred to his rural antecedents in County Kerry in Ireland, and then highlighted his passion for agriculture and its people, and the pleasure he had obtained from working with some many fine people – researchers, extension people and producers over the years. There were some excellent reminiscences! The event finished with John and some of the party adjoining for a very enjoyable lunch at the Capelberry Café in Capel, just south of Bunbury.
Congratulations John, and thanks to Don Burnside for this report.
