Wed 21 Jun 2017 @6 p.m. Dinner, 7 p.m. Presentation & Q&A
SPEAKERS:
Rob Velthuis, General Manager Novozymes Biologicals Australia Pty Ltd and Vice President of the AgInstitute Victoria who represent professional agricultural scientists, consultants and natural resource managers. Rob is a professional agricultural scientist with over 35 years of helping Australian broad-acre farmers.
Rob will speak about range of microbes used in current agricultural systems. Learn about rhizobium bacteria that convert nitrogen from the air into plant available nitrogen. Learn how these microbes are mass produced and then added back on to legume crops such as fababeans, lentils, vetch, field pea, chickpeas and lupins. Rhizobium contribute over $4 billion dollars of natural nitrogen and reduces the need for manufactured nitrogen fertilisers.
Learn about new ‘phosphate solubilising’ penicillium fungal products being introduced into Australian farming systems. These products can be used to unlock part of the $10 billion dollars of ‘locked up’ fertiliser phosphates in our cropping soils accumulated over 100 years from continual fertiliser phosphate use. These products will be used more in the future as our easily accessible mined phosphate reserves are reduced.
Rob will also speak about a new beneficial bacterial product Actinovate. Actinovate is a new bio-fungicide that controls one of the world’s worst vegetable diseases powdery mildew. Learn how this product will be used in agricultural systems in order to reduce the use of synthetic pesticides.
