Excellence in Agriculture Day

In conjunction with Farm Writers Australia

HIGHLIGHTS:

Chris Russell Medal of Excellence

A prestigious State Award for undergraduate students who are completing their agriculture, natural resource management and/or animal science studies and are undertaking a research project as part of their studies. NSW Student finalists will be delivering presentations with Chris Russell presenting his insights into his vision of agriculture in to the future.

Farm Writers Agribuzz

Following the presentations guests will be invited to attend the Agribuzz event. Agribuzz is a great opportunity to hear from a guest speaker and network with other professionals in agriculture. For more details go to: https://nswfarmwriters.org.au/site/index.php

Tickets for the event will include entry to the Show, light refreshments to accompany the student presentations and entry to the Agribuzz event.

DATE:

Tuesday 31st March, 2015

TIME:

All day access to the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

3:00pm registration.

3:30pm presentations commence.

Agribuzz event will commence at 6:30pm following the presentations.

VENUE:

Pearson Room, The Dome, Sydney Showground, Sydney Royal Easter Show

Afterwards at the Main Arena for the Agribuzz event. MAPS BELOW.

COST (GST Incl.):

AIA member: $50

AIA non member: $60

Tickets for entrance to the show will be available for pick up at the main entrance gate.

Chris Russell Medal of Excellent

Chris Russell

Fellow of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology

Trained as an agricultural scientist and specialising in conserved fodder and intensive cattle feeding, Chris has spent the last thirty years working in various technical and commercial roles in over 30 countries including a UN sponsored mission to Mongolia to help the nomadic herders adapt to a privatised economy after the collapse of the USSR in 1992. As long standing Fellow of the AIA Chris was invited to be an integral part of the NSW State Award. He will be presenting his insights in to his vision of agriculture in to the future, supporting the students who will be the face of agriculture in the years to come.

 

Olivia Agar

Graduate of University of Sydney, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture

Research Area: Genetic Variation in Pollen High Temperature Tolerance on Wheat.

Olivia has always been interested in plant physiology and plant breeding which lead her to this research area. Improving the adaptive capacity of crops for future climates is a current issue that is faced globally and combining her interests in this research area meant she could also contribute to the global industry.  Olivia was impassioned by this area of research and hopes for either further study or a career in the grains industry.

 

Mitchell Plumbe

Graduate of University of New England, Bachelor of Rural Science.

Research area: The Effects of Sulfur Banding on

 Localised Root Proliferation of Wheat.

Mitchell grew up in Dorrigo and was heavily involved in various enterprises including dairy, beef and vegetables. Throughout his degree, Mitchell developed an interest in soils and agronomy and was quick to find his feet in soil and plant nutrition. He has recently taken up employment with the Western Local Lands Services and is excited to be gaining experience in rangeland grazing and learn about an environment that differs so greatly from Dorrigo.

 

Anthea Slack

Graduate of University of New England,

Bachelor of Natural Resources/Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning.

Research area: The Impact of a River Impoundment on the Behaviour and Habitat Selection of the Australian Lungfish.

Anthea developed an interest in water management and riparian health after spending much of her youth on property watching flooding rivers and wet years in the Hunter Valley. This led Anthea to her degree and passion for natural resource management. Anthea has been involved in community water and revegetation projects and looks to continue to work on natural resource management issues in the future.

 

Adrian Brereton

Graduate of University of New England, Bachelor of Science, Honours.

Research Area: Affect of Controlled Burns on Depth Distribution of Carbon.

Throughout high school Adrian has had a passion for science and the natural world. By focusing on soil science at University he has apply his love of science with agriculture and the natural environment. Adrian now plans to go on with further research and contribute to a sustainable world
